When New Line was selected by the City of St. Thomas to design and build their new skatepark, our goal was to create something completely unique for this community park. The history of the railway industry is deeply embedded into the cultural identity of St. Thomas. As such, we committed ourselves to “Railway City Skatepark” thematic inspiration very early on in the process. This thematic inspiration carried through with the public outreach meetings, conceptual design, detailed design and facility construction. As a result, this 11,000 sqft skatepark features and expansive plaza section with several ledge and handrail features with details inspired by the iconic architecture of several railway bridges common to the area. The expansive plaza section is complimented with a miniramp and ‘transition/flow’ section located at the east end of the park. Additional park elements that reinforce the railway theme include the entry sign, a floor pattern detail that emulates the parallel lines of the railway tracks, as well as some actual cast-iron railway rails incorporated as grind rails.
